Canada’s changed approach towards International students
In 2023, approximately 900,000 students study in Canada. A permit to work full-time or part-time for this relatively big community is given by Canadian government in order to support their cost of living. There are rules approved by the Canadian government according to this issue that’s been undergone some changes in 2024:
IRCC’s policy towards international students work has been changed and now the students can work off-campus 40-hours per week.
This will be helpful for many international students across Canada and lifts the financial burden from them.
but in order to control the arrival of students who are probable to not being able to afford the costs of living in Canada, the old amount of 10,000 CAD for students’ visas to be approved has been announced to change to 20,635 CAD. This new rule will apply to study permit applications received on or after January 1st 2024.
The federal government is looking more thoughtfully at Canada’s international student program and its operation, recently there has been some adjustments and this is the latest of them.
Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, stated:
“International students provide significant cultural, social and economic benefits to their communities, but they have also faced challenges navigating life in Canada. We are revising the cost-of-living threshold so that international students understand the true cost of living here. This measure is key to their success in Canada. We are also exploring options to ensure that students find adequate housing. These long-overdue changes will protect international students from financially vulnerable situations and exploitation.”
